About

FAWZIAH QADIR

A Smiling Black woman in a suit

Hello, I am Fawziah

Educator. Researcher. Consultant.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Dr. Fawziah A. Qadir's early experience with educational desegregation profoundly influenced her path. As a product of diverse schooling experiences, she discovered the powerful impact that education has on shaping one's future.

Dr. Qadir's academic journey reflects a broad and deep commitment to social justice. She earned her BA in Political Science and International Relations from Fairleigh Dickinson Madison and her MA in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University. This solid grounding in political and international dynamics was supplemented by her second MA in International Human Rights Law from the American University in Cairo, with a focus on the right to education. She holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University.

Bringing more than a decade of experience in the non-profit education sector, including serving as a program director, Dr. Qadir has grappled with the complexities of understanding and serving Black youth in education. These experiences underpin her current role as an assistant term professor of education at Barnard College, where her teaching philosophy, deeply rooted in social justice and inspired by Paolo Freire's notion of "armed love," centers on eradicating injustices and empowering students. Committed to fostering a transformative educational environment, she encourages critical thinking about oppression, resistance, and social reproduction among her students.

Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Qadir finds joy in travel, photography, and content creation. She is passionate about social justice, human rights, and youth mentoring, passions which are also evident in her professional pursuits.

As she looks to the future, Dr. Qadir aspires to expand her advocacy work, cultivate partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations, and contribute to the field through her research and publications. She invites you to join her in this mission, whether through engaging with her research, participating in her courses, or collaborating on projects aimed at advancing educational equity.
